	Florence Nightingale Medical Pioneer

In Letters to Malcolm (1963) C. S. Lewis noted that the more "up to date" a book tried to be, the sooner it would become dated.

Lewis was appalled that anyone would read a good book only once. In 1933 he wrote to Arthur Greeves, "Clearly one must read every good book at least once every ten years…"

Many friends noted that nothing pleased Lewis more than being slightly sick, so that he could lie in bed all day reading a good book.

	Fact: Corrie ten Boom gave her books away by the thousands!


	Fact: John Wesley and brother Charles published 23 hymn collections!


	The above books, available in most large libraries, offer good coverage of the heroes. Be warned of recent 'slash and trash' biographies of these heroes from secular publishers. The reasoning of modern-day publishers seems to be that the standard objective biographies have been written of major historical figures. They further reason that only a book that exposes dirt about such historical figures will sell. Thus, highly speculative, very negative biographies are being published.


	A prime example of modern 'slash and trash' is Tim Jeal's book on David Livingstone, published in 1973 by P. G. Putnam's Sons. According to Jeal: � � � "...Livingstone appears to have failed in all he most wished to achieve..." � � � "There were other failures too: failure as a husband and a father..." � � � "Livingstone and others like him were culturally arrogant..." � � � "...he was able to shrug off the deaths of the missionaries..." � � � "Horror of failure...led him to lie deliberately...� � � " � � � "Livingstone's yearnings for praise and recognition..." � � � "Livingstone's love of fame..." Livingstone's brave wife Mary comes off no better. According to Jeal, Mary was a drunk, a backslider and rumored to be an adulteress. Nor do missionaries in general merit any praise from Jeal. Jeal contends missionaries gloss over their failures by saying "God undoubtedly had a plan too large for any individual to understand". Missionaries further deceive -according to Jeal - by "stressing and exaggerating the supposed depravity of the natives". Christian History magazine recommended Jeal's 'slash and trash' book for further reading on Livingstone, a fact that casts great doubt on their own thoroughness.
